Who Am I?<\/strong><\/p>\n

My name is Jarno Ralli and I was born in Finland in the early 70s. Since the year 2000 I have lived in several different countries, including Chile, Spain, U.K and Germany, working in different industries varying from the mining industry to the 3D scanning- and automotive industries, and lately in deep learning based video analytics and biometric identification.<\/p>\n

Education and Experience<\/strong><\/p>\n

I have a B.Sc in industrial automation, M.Sc in computer sciences and a PhD in computer vision. Since 2011 I have worked in different computer vision related roles, varying from a computer vision engineer to the head of research. I have expertise in both the ‘traditional’  geometry based approaches, such as 3D-reconstruction, optical-flow, simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), and machine- and deep learning based approaches.<\/p>\n

Computer Vision<\/strong><\/p>\n

As a computer vision engineer, I have implemented image processing pipelines, written algorithms in C++, set up continuous integration (CI) and deployment (CD), and MLOps pipelines. As the Head of Department, I have built up both engineering- and research teams, looked after all aspects of research and engineering, varying from setting up agile software development processes to budget planning and related. Due to having worked in very small start-ups and large corporations with more than 150.000 employees worldwide, I have a good understanding of the processes required to successfully run a department in an international company.<\/p>\n

My Interests<\/strong><\/p>\n

My first computer was a ZX Spectrum 48K that I got in 1982. It came with a manual, only written in English, a language I did not speak at the time. My father translated meanings of mnemonics like FOR…NEXT, and that was how I learned to write my first simple programs. After all these years it still amazes me the kind of cool things you can do with having only two logical states, namely False (0) and True (1). I am enthusiastic about computer vision and machine learning. I consider myself lucky to have been able to lead so many different projects that use cutting edge computer vision technology. Following figure shows a 3D scan of yours truly. The 3D-scanner in question uses technology based on my Ph.D thesis.<\/p>\n
